Why Stabiliser Should Be One Of Your Essentials

When you stitch buttonholes or decorative stitches - either for purely decorative reasons or around the edge of your appliqué, your machine needs to move the feed dogs and fabric forwards and backwards, and sometimes side to side. This can be tough for your machine to hold on to your fabric, which is why stabiliser was invented!

Stabiliser is pretty cheap to buy so it's worth having as a staple in your sewing basket/bag/box.

So, why use stabiliser?

Well, firstly it stops your fabric from puckering, moving around or stretching. This ensures that your fabric stays mains in place and keeps its shape whilst you are stitching, meaning that you get more accurate and consistent results.

Next, your stabiliser gives a firm foundation to your fabric, particularly for the lighter weight fabrics making it easier for your machine to get a grip on your fabric. This ultimately means that your feed dogs can move your fabric along so that your decorative stitching, or button hole stitching, travels along evenly instead of stitching in a big knot in one place.

This leads on to the stitching itself. Because it has a firmer foundation with the stabiliser, it will mean your stitches are evenly spaced and sit on the fabric (rather than sink into it) and have a nice even tension.

All of this makes for a MUCH nicer stitching experience for you.

Hope that helps,
Happy stitching!
