Got a sewing machine gathering dust?
Bought fabric you're too afraid to cut into?
Feel nervous about buttonholes... or 😳 zips?

You're so not alone - and this is exactly the place to start. Over twelve relaxed and supportive weekly sessions (over two terms), you'll learn to use a sewing machine, build your confidence whilst making three handy projects, and finally learn to sew.
Five-star Google review from Rich Dunnett praising Kim's Beginners Sewing course for its small class sizes, hands-on sewing machine tuition and fun atmosphere.

Sewing Classes in Newent

By the end of the course, you'll have made three lovely, practical projects to show off your new skills:

πŸ‘œ A re-usable tote bag (go shopping in style!)

πŸ‘©πŸ³ A fabulous apron (perfect for cooking, gardening or giving as a gift to your favourite foodie)

πŸ›‹οΈ A fun little cushion (for snuggling, pimping up your sofa, gifting or basically for showing off)

On the Beginner Sewing Course, you'll learn:

  • What all those mysterious sewing machine dials and buttons do so you learn how to use your sewing machine;
  • How to thread your machine and wind a bobbin (without the frustration!);
  • Which sewing machine feet to use and when, and how to change them
  • The truth about needles and thread (spoiler alert: they're not all created equal!);
  • How to sew a straight line, even if you're wobblier than a drunk flamingo to start with;
  • How to sew round corners like a pro;
  • How to insert buttonholes and zips – even if they terrify you now!
  • And loads of tips to make sewing feel simple, fun and achievable.
There will be plenty of time for questions, practice, and support – no rushing, no judgment, and no jargon. Guaranteed plenty of laughs along the way though.

What You'll Be Learning Week by Week:

TERM 1:

  • Week 1 – Getting Started

    We'll cover everything you need in your basic sewing kit, along with needle sizes and why they matter. You'll also learn about different types of thread (they're not all created equal!) and we'll discuss fabric choices for your tote bag project.

  • Week 2 – Threading your Machine and Practicing Sewing

    You'll learn how to thread your machine and bobbin and find out what all the buttons and dials do on your machine. You'll get started with be practicing sewing with your machine on some specially prepared practice fabric that I'll provide.

  • Week 3 – Understanding Fabric and Cutting Out

    You'll prepare and cut out the fabric for your tote bag, learning how to handle directional prints and exploring the "anatomy" of fabric β€” you'll discover it's not the same in every direction!

  • Week 4 – Handles, Pockets and Interfacing

    This week we're sewing your tote bag handles and adding pockets. You'll learn all about interfacing β€” what it is, when to use it, and how to choose the right type for your project.

  • Week 5 – Constructing Your Bag

    We'll finish your tote bag, complete with boxed corners (aka a flat bottom!). You'll also choose fabric for your next project: a lovely cushion.

  • Week 6 – Cutting and Starting Your Cushion

    We'll cut out your cushion pieces and start sewing. You'll get more confident with accuracy and piecing techniques.

Five-star Google review from Jacqui praising Kim's 12-week Beginners Sewing course in Gloucestershire for its fun, supportive teaching and confidence-building skills.

TERM 2:

  • Week 7 – Zips and Finishing Touches To Your Cushion

    Time to finish your cushion and learn how to insert a zip - don't worry, it's easier than it looks (I promise!). Then we'll pop in the cushion pad and chat about fabric options for your apron.

  • Week 8 – Cutting and Pockets

    We'll cut out your apron pieces and make the front pocket, getting everything ready for construction.

  • Week 9 – Straps and Ties

    Time to make and attach your apron neck strap and waist ties, and begin assembling the apron body.

  • Week 10 – Construction and Finishing

    We'll finish attaching all the apron pieces and check all is OK. Give it a good press and show it off! (Possibly starting your new modelling career)

  • Week 11 – Looking After Your Machine

    This week I'll teach you how to clean and maintain your sewing machine and we'll go through some troubleshooting.

  • Week 12 - Finishing and Graduation!

    We'll finish off anything that needs finishing, or if you've finished everything then I have a fun little surprise project up my sleeve that you'll be able to whip up in this final lesson. It's also a good time that we can talk about which sewing direction you want to go in next and I can signpost you to the right places to learn. It's also time for a little celebration to mark how far you've come!

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I've never used a sewing machine before?

That's absolutely fine – I have specially designed this course for complete beginners to sewing! I'll guide you step by step, with clear instructions, practical demos, and plenty of support. No experience necessary, and no such thing as a silly question.

Do I need my own sewing machine?

Yes, you'll need to bring your own machine each week. If you're not sure if it's suitable or how to use it yet, don't worry, I'll help you get to grips with it as part of the course. Feel free to contact me beforehand if you want to double check, or want to discuss buying a machine (I don't sell them but happy to give advice and what would suit you best).

Can I hire a sewing machine?

Yes, I have three machines available to hire for each lesson for a nominal sum of Β£5 per lesson to cover maintenance costs. Hiring machines is on a first come - first served basis and subject to availability. You will not be able to take the machine home with you.

What materials or equipment do I need to bring?

You'll need some basic sewing supplies like scissors, pins, thread, as well as fabric for each of the three projects. I'll send you a full supplies list before the course starts, and you'll also receive a 10% discount code to use at my online shop.

What if I miss a session?

No problem. I'll make sure you can catch up in the next class, and if needed, I can send you written instructions or a short video to help you keep up from home.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! Just make sure you both book early, as spaces are limited and workshops often fill up quickly.

How many people will be in the class?

Class sizes are kept small at no more than 8 people, so that everyone gets individual attention, time to ask questions, and support at their own pace. It's also a closed group which means people can't join half way through, and you'll make lots of new friends in your group.

Are your classes open to men?

Absolutely! Sewing is for everyone, and gents are more than welcome to join. Whether you're completely new or brushing up on old skills, you'll be made to feel right at home.

Are your classes LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Yes, 100%. My workshops are welcoming, inclusive spaces for everyone. Kindness, respect and support are at the heart of everything I do: sewing really is for anyone who wants to learn.

Is the venue accessible?

Yes. Newent Community Pavilion is fully accessible.

Is there parking?

Yes, there is free parking on site.

What's your cancellation policy?

Because places are limited, cancellations are based on how much notice you give. Please read the full Cancellation Policy here for details.
πŸ’¬ If you have any accessibility needs, or you're unsure whether this course is right for you, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I'll always do my best to help.
